Before the detail

The same in every room.

The house was never drawn on paper, so no two rooms are the same shape. These are the things that do not change.

  • Percale cotton and wool blankets
  • Its own bathroom, none shared
  • Wi-fi (slower at the back of the werf)
  • Kettle, filter coffee, rooibos, rusk tin
  • Ceiling fan in summer, heater in winter
  • Shutters that actually close
  • Hairdryer, iron on request
  • No television, and no minibar

Spandau

The one with the view

The front corner room, and the reason the house is called what it is. Two windows look straight down the garden at the koppie, and there is a door of your own onto the stoep, so you can carry coffee out without going through the hall.

It is the biggest of the four and the brightest in the morning. It is also the closest to the front gate, so on a Saturday you will hear a bakkie go past now and then.

Sneeuberg

The cool one

Deep in the house on the south side, with one high window and the thickest wall in the building behind the bed. In February, when everything else has given up, this room is still cold to walk into at three in the afternoon.

It has the only bath in the house — a proper old cast-iron one — with a shower over it. We ask that the bath is used sparingly; the town has been on water restrictions for years.

Aloe

The quiet one

The smallest room and the one people ask for a second time. It sits at the back with nothing behind it but the veld, and a glass door opens onto a walled scrap of courtyard with two chairs and the aloe it is named after.

If you are here to sleep, sleep late, and read — this is the room. It is a single queen bed and a shower, and there is not much floor space left over, which nobody has ever complained about.

Die Werf

The family one

The old outbuilding across the yard, which was a stable and then a workshop and is now the room families ask for. A queen at one end, two singles behind a half-wall at the other, and its own door onto the werf so nobody has to be quiet in the hall.

It is also the room to take if you are travelling with someone who snores, or if you would rather come and go without meeting anybody. Two friends split it happily.

How a booking happens

You send dates. Nadia replies with a firm price and what is free. A 50% deposit by EFT holds the room; the balance is settled by EFT or cash when you leave. There is no card machine in the house and nothing is ever charged on this website.

If plans change

Cancel more than 21 days out and the deposit comes back less R150 for the bank. Between 20 and 8 days we keep half. Inside a week we keep the deposit — unless we fill the room, in which case you get it back anyway.

The only minimum

Two nights between 15 December and 10 January, and over the Easter weekend. The rest of the year a single night is fine, and honestly welcome — but the third night is where people relax.

Rates are in South African Rand and include 15% VAT. There is no booking fee, no service charge and no tourism levy added to your bill. A long stay brings the nightly rate down — ask.

Before you ask

The questions we actually get.

Can we see the rooms before choosing?

Yes. Tell us roughly what you want — bath or shower, quiet or view, own entrance — and Nadia will tell you which of the four to take. It is a small house; she has never got it wrong on purpose.

Is the house suitable for someone with limited mobility?

Honestly, not very. There is a step up into the house from the stoep, a step down into two of the bathrooms, an uneven yard across to Die Werf, and a low doorway there. There is no lift and no ground-floor-flat layout, because it is an 1880s cottage. Spandau is the easiest room to reach and has a level walk-in shower. Please ask us before you book — we would much rather talk it through than have you arrive to a problem.

Are children welcome?

Very. Die Werf is the room for a family, with its own door so nobody is tiptoeing. Under-threes stay free. There is a lemon tree to climb and a yard to run in, and we have never once minded the noise before eight in the evening.

Can we bring the dog?

No, sorry — except a guide dog, which is always welcome. There is a good kennel just outside town and Nadia will send you the number.

Is there secure parking?

Off-street, behind a gate that locks, inside the property. Bicycles and motorbikes go in the old stable at the back of the werf.

What time can we get in?

Check-in is from 14:00 to 20:00, and check-out is by 10:00. If your drive is going to put you here later than eight, tell us — it happens constantly on the Karoo roads and we will simply wait up.

Do you have a star grading?

No. We are a guest house in the ordinary South African sense — a house, with breakfast, and rooms that are ours to look after — and we have never put ourselves through the grading process. What we have instead is a book on the hall table.
